Woodward 2301 Digital Speed Controller

The Woodward 2301 is a microprocessor-based digital speed controller for prime movers. It provides accurate closed-loop speed control for diesel engines, gas engines, steam turbines and hydro turbines, with configurable dynamics and multiple protection functions.

Speed input: magnetic pickup, 10Hz to 10kHz. Output: 4-20mA analog, 2 relay contacts. Power supply: 24V DC ±20%. Speed accuracy: ±0.1% of set speed. Operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C.

Digital PID control with adjustable gains provides precise speed regulation. Soft start and ramp functions control acceleration. Built-in overspeed and underspeed protection. Idle and rated speed setpoints. Optional CAN communication for system integration. Non-volatile memory stores settings and fault logs.

It controls speed of generator sets, industrial engines, pump drives, compressor drives, steam turbines and hydro turbines in power generation, oil & gas, and process industries.

Steady-state speed accuracy: ±0.1%. Transient recovery time: <2 seconds for 10% load change. Overspeed response time: <10ms. Operating temperature range: -40°C to +85°C.

Housing: die-cast aluminum alloy. PCB: FR-4 with conformal coating. Relays: silver alloy contacts. Terminals: tin-plated copper.

It features panel-mount metal housing, front panel LED indicators, terminal strip connections, sealed front bezel, and mounting brackets.

It measures engine speed from the magnetic pickup signal, compares it to the setpoint, and executes a PID control algorithm to output a control signal to the fuel or steam actuator, maintaining engine speed at the desired value under varying load conditions.

Mount on control panel or engine console. Connect magnetic pickup speed sensor. Wire actuator output and power supply. Set speed setpoints and gain values via configuration. Connect engine safety circuits to relay outputs.
